Can’t even tell you how real this is to me. Child of the baby internet. Met people throught the Alt.Music.Ska board, chatted with people (made friends!) through the AOL punk and ska chat rooms… oh early internet. I miss you.
OOOOOH GIRL! Yes, I remember AIM being so key to my makeoutclub.com love life. My girls and I would peruse the site at two am for boys that looked like they could be in the Strokes. I met the only boy I thought I was going to marry through that site. He had dyed black hair, freckles, liked Mr. Show, The State, Weezer, and Ryan Adams.HE WAS MY DREAM BOY! He sent me care packages including Rushmore on vhs (dude, dvds were for rich people!), amazing mix tapes I played till they couldn’t play anymore (he put The Ramones’ I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend on it… I was hooked!), hand written love letters, Ghost World (the book), his old Journey shirt that smelled like him, buttered popcorn jelly bellies, and a ton of other stuff. Many nights were spent in the computer room at my college on AIM cooing to eachother and longing to see each other though we were so far away from one another. I fell so hard, so completely. The result was a broken heart… but man, was it fun getting it broken! So, thank you, Early internet. I met some of the most amazing people through you. People that changed and made me who I am.
And yeah, I need to buy this zine. And you should too.
